A Clinical Observation on Tuberculous Meningitis in Childhood

Abstract
Clinical observation was made on 186 children with tuberculous meningitis who were admitted¢¥ to our pediatric department during the past 13 years from 19Ei4 to 1976. The following result have bee:i obtained: The case numbers were highest during summer months and no difference of yearly distribution was seen.
The highest attack rate was noticed in the age group of 1 to 4, and 4 (74.5 0) were under the age of 6.
In one third of the cases (36.6 0) contact with a known tuberculous sources could be found, especially among the family numbers, and parental sources constituted two third.
Vomiting and fever were the most common presenting symptoms at the time of admission. Ascociate3 tuberculous lesions were seen in half of the cases, with miliary tuberculous lesion on chest :~-ray in 16.1%.
With antituberculous therapy including steroid, favorable clinical response was obtained in 94 cases (50.5 0) during hospitalization and 35 case (18.8%) died.
Out of the 18 cases with neurological sequelae, seizure w~is seen in 7, hemiplegia in 5 and; personality disorder in 2.
